I started tap dancing at the very young age of three. Although I was young, I loved every moment of it and I always looked forward to going to dance lessons on Fridays. Tap soon became my life and when I was younger I never thought in a million years that I would join a dance group.
I joined a tap dancing group that was different from other dances studios and companies. Our dance group has never competed in a competition and we have never paid for dance lessons. Instead, we give back to our community through our tap dancing. We perform at retirement homes and local events like the OC Fair, and we have an annual recital the first Saturday of May.
Once I got more advanced in tap, I was put into Saturday class and I soon found myself enjoying tap dancing even more, even if it meant sacrificing my Saturday mornings. I have made so many friends through my tap group and I have learned so many new things. I have learned how to choreograph dance routines and how to count music.
I even co-teach a kid’s class and an adult class. I now love tap dancing so much that I cannot imagine my life without it. I once told my mom that I would give any other hobby or extracurricular activity, but tap would always be my favorite and I would never give it up for anything else.
My dance teacher started the tap group because she saw first-hand how expensive dance lessons were at studios. She and her son danced at a studio for years, but they wanted something more.
She wanted everyone to enjoy tap dancing without it costing people an arm and a leg. But, she also wanted a way to give back to the community and she wanted to perform for people who couldn’t easily go out to see a dance performance.
She started a small group about twenty years ago and ever since then it has continued to grow. Lessons are free of charge and the only thing you pay for are costumes. Classes depend on skill level are held on Fridays from 4 p.m.-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
Our main goal: to put a smile on people’s faces, to have fun, and to share our love for tap dancing with others. Our motto is simple yet impactful:
WE DON’T DANCE FOR
WE DON’T DANCE FOR
WE DO DANCE TO
KEEP AN ART FORM ALIVE
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY WE DANCE FOR
